The body of a 46-year-old man who went missing after a police lathi charge on a protesting mob at Edavanna in Malappuram district, was found floating inside a well today, police said.
On getting information from the locals this morning police recovered the body of Aiyyappan, a native of Pathapiriyam near Edavannam, from the well about a km away from the spot where lathi charge took place yesterday.
Ayyappan could have fell into the well as he failed to notice the well while fleeing the spot where a police lathi charge took place to disperse a protesting mob over an issue last night as there was no electricity at that time, Edavanna police said.
A protest by the local people yesterday against the bitumen mixing unit in Manjerikkad in Pathapiriyam turned violent following which three vehicles carrying machines to the spot were set on fire by the irate mob.
One of the vehicles and the machines were completely gutted in the fire, they said.
Efforts by the police till late in the evening yesterday to pacify the protesters, including women, who had squatted on Pathapiriyam-Thuvvakkad road disrupting traffic, to disperse peacefully went unheeded.
Following this, police resoted to lathi charge to disperse the mob who blocked the police move to allow passge of vehicles, they said.
