MCD elections: 11 transport unions to boycott polls

A joint action committee of 11 transport unions here today announced the boycott of the April 23 MCD polls in protest against toll tax, high parking and registration fees.
The Committee, formed by unions, also called for a four- day-long dharna starting from April 20 at Jantar Mantar.
Convenor of the committee, Balwant Singh Bhullar said that the unions -- Delhi NCR Transport Ekta Manch, All Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union, Rajdhani Tourist Driver Union, Delhi Transport Association and other seven transport associations will boycott the civic bodies elections.
"The three municipal corporations levy toll tax on each entry of our vehicles in the city. It also charges parking fee from us, but it does not provide parking space. Also, there should be one-time state tax imposed on the commercial vehicles. There is also no health policy for us.

"We have been raising our demands for a long time, but they are being ignored by the political parties. In view of this, 11 transport unions have decided to boycott MCD elections," Bhullar said.
