A meeting to discuss development of the 'backward' Avadh-Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh here has resolved to stop agricultural land there from being acquired by industrialists.
Three sitting MPs from the region participated in the meeting, organised jointly by the Uttar Pradesh Development Forum (UPDF) and Observer Research Foundation yesterday.
"In North India, the Purvanchal region is considered to be backward where various schemes of Central and state governments are not being properly utilised.
"In the meeting where three MPs from the region also participated, we resolved that agriculture land there is not lost to industrialisation and agro-based industries are developed there," said UPDF member Pankaj Jaiswal.
The MPs who participated in the discussion were Lallu Singh, Sharad Tripathi and Harivansh Singh who represent Faizabad, Sant Kabir Nagar and Pratapgarh constituencies, respectively.
"It has been decided that work will be done to start cargo plane services from Faizabad airport," Jaiswal said.
He added that the MPs have taken a resolve to keep working on the schemes related to the development of agriculture in the region and that the Central government will be requested to allot more schemes for the region.
