Meghalaya legislator Dikkanchi D Shira today demanded investigation into the implementation of Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) after several schools in the state were reportedly found without drinking water facilities.
"I urge the minister to launch an inquiry into the implementation of the programme and take action accordingly," the Mahendraganj MLA demanded in the Assembly.
In his reply, Minister in-charge PHE Prestone Tynsong has assured to look into the matter and maintained that as per provisions, toilets in all schools should be provided with water supply.
"Once the implementation of programme is completed, the department will ensure that water is provided to every schools," Tynsong said.
He said that lower primary and upper primary schools, both government and non-government, are covered under the TSC.
"Under the programme, a total of 13,501 toilets for boys and 14,867 toilets for girls have been constructed. Out of this, repairing work in 2000 toilets have been completed while 175 of them do not require any repair work," he said.
Claiming that all toilets are functional, the minister said the scheme was launched in 2004-05 and an amount of Rs 20,000 was sanctioned for construction of toilets. In 2014, the amount was raised to Rs 40,000.
