Barely 48 hours after deciding to sell Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) at country-made liquor shops, Madhya Pradesh government today decided to roll it back following stiff opposition from within and outside.
"We have decided to take back the decision. Now the IMFL will not be sold from the country-made liquor shops," Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told reporters after the BJP's two-day-long state executive meeting.
"I have discussed the matter with state BJP president Narendra Singh Tomar and our heart felt that it needs to be taken back," Chouhan said.
From now onwards, no new liquor shop will be set up on the state's land, he asserted.
The BJP had also promised in its poll manifesto not to set up any new liquor shop in the state.
Earlier, Chouhan announced to reconsider the decision to allow sale of the IMFL from country-made liquor shops but after reaching party headquarters, he decided to roll it back.
Chouhan also made an announcement to this effect while addressing the concluding session of state executive meeting.
The state Cabinet at its meeting on January 6 had taken a decision to allow sale of IMFL from country-made liquor shops despite stiff opposition from some of the ministers, party sources said.
The decision was also strongly opposed by Congress and other sections of the society.
Chouhan said it was not necessary that once the decision was taken, it will not be taken back. "We did so and have changed the decision on the matter," he added.
