MP's death handled in a callous way by Delhi Police: SP

Tiwari, who had taken oath as a member of the Upper House on April 24 on being elected for the second term, died here of cardiac arrest on April 25.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Mohan Singh (SP) said, "A police van had come to take him to the hospital from Shalimar Bagh on April 24 night on complains of heart attack. His body was dumped in the mortuary of Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital at 2 am as an unclaimed body in an insensitive manner ...The matter should be probed," he said.

Singh said the police van was called by the guard of the Housing Society who had sought help from police helpline no 100 on Tiwari's request.

"At 7 am on April 25 when I along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav reached the hospital, we found the body lying among 20 such unclaimed bodies," he said.

Singh, in a choked voice, added that the hospital authorities refused to hand over the body to SP leaders saying it was brought by the police as "unclaimed" and could be handed over only after ACP's arrival.

The body lay outside for half-an-hour reflecting the treatment meted out to an MP, he said, on which almost entire House demanded a probe into the matter.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Rajeev Shukla intervened saying, "The issue is serious. The government will take it up seriously. I will convey it to the Home Minister for a probe on which strict action will be taken against the guilty."

Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) and members from BJP demanded that the issue be referred to the Privileges Committee as it pertained to an MP.

They said when such treatment could be meted out to an MP, the plight of the common man could well be understood.

P J Kurien, who was in the Chair, said the Chairman will consider the notice for referring the matter to the Privilege Committee. PTI NAM AMR SKC AKK
