Amid speculations of a rift between Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and her erstwhile right hand man Mukul Roy, the party today reposed faith in his son Subhranshu and nominated him as a candidate for next month's election in a municipality in West Bengal.
Subhranshu today filed his nomination to contest from ward no 6 in Kancharapara municipality in North 24 Parganas district, which will go to the polls on April 25 along with 90 other municipalities across Bengal.
Subhranshu, a party legislator had yesterday expressed willingness to contest the election.
"I am a sitting councillor of Kanchrapara municipality. I am ready to contest, provided the leadership gives me a ticket," Subhranshu, TMC MLA from Bijpur in North 24 Parganas district, had said.
Subhranshu had said the party leadership had assigned him the task of overseeing the campaign for Kanchrapara and Halisahar municipalities. "I am doing my bit. If the leadership chooses me as its nominee for Kanchrapara, I have no problem in contesting the polls."
Defending the nomination of Subhranshu, who recently hit out at the party leadership on some counts and alleged that his father was being humiliated in the party, veteran TMC leader and Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee said, "Subhrangshu is very much in the party."
"There is nothing wrong in nominating him. We have not expelled him from the party though there were controversies at times (centering on Subhranghu's recent critical comments hitting out at party leadership)", Mukherjee told reporters.
Party leader from North 24 paraganas Nirmal Ghosh said "If Subhranshu happens to have the faith in Mamata Banerjee at the helm of TMC, the party has also reposed faith in him (by making him a candidate).
The nomination assumes significance against the backdrop of whispers in the TMC camp that Mukul Roy has been maintaining a distance from the party. The speculation became more intense after he was questioned by the CBI in the Saradha scam.
