The city unit promised to raise a total of Rs 1.1 crore for the purpose.
City MLAs contributed Rs one lakh while the rest of the amount came from the workers. The cheque of Rs 51 lakh was given to AICC General Secretary Mohan Prakash who will hand it over to the Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
MPs will contribute Rs two lakh. The meeting held at Shanmukhanand hall in Central Mumbai for the purpose of felicitating party leaders from Mumbai for their appointments in the AICC was converted into a discussion on raising funds for the relief works on request of Gurudas Kamat, the newly appointed CWC member and AICC General Secretary and other leaders.
Chief Minister Chavan, while speaking on the occasion, said the government has already given Rs 10 crore as help to the Uttarakhand government..
"Two control rooms have been set up in Uttarakhand and one in Mumbai. Twenty officers have been dispatched to the hill state to assist in relief works and two more are leaving tonight. Six doctors will be sent with medicines. Those who are ill and in distress have been contacting the control rooms," he said.
Congratulating the leaders from the state, Chavan said the recently appointed new AICC team is the team of Rahul Gandhi for Mission 2014.
