Mumbai unit of Congress today donated Rs 51 lakh towards relief and rehabilitation of the victims and those affected by the devastating floods in Uttarakhand.
The city unit promised to raise a total of Rs 1.1 crore for the purpose.
City MLAs contributed Rs one lakh while the rest of the amount came from the workers. The cheque of Rs 51 lakh was given to AICC General Secretary Mohan Prakash who will hand it over to the Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
MPs will contribute Rs two lakh. The meeting held at Shanmukhanand hall in Central Mumbai for the purpose of felicitating party leaders from Mumbai for their appointments in the AICC was converted into a discussion on raising funds for the relief works on request of Gurudas Kamat, the newly appointed CWC member and AICC General Secretary and other leaders.
All party workers were instructed not to come to the airport to receive the leaders, nor bring any flowers, garlands and bouquets to the function as they will not be accepted and not to burst any fire crackers.
Chief Minister Chavan, while speaking on the occasion, said the government has already given Rs 10 crore as help to the Uttarakhand government..
"Two control rooms have been set up in Uttarakhand and one in Mumbai. Twenty officers have been dispatched to the hill state to assist in relief works and two more are leaving tonight. Six doctors will be sent with medicines. Those who are ill and in distress have been contacting the control rooms," he said.
In addition to Rs 10 crore, Rs 50 lakhs have been given to the officers on duty so that immediate relief can be given to the survivors from the state so that they can travel from Dehradun to Delhi and to Mumbai. Two helicopters will also be sent from Mumbai," he said.
Congratulating the leaders from the state, Chavan said the recently appointed new AICC team is the team of Rahul Gandhi for Mission 2014.
