A Mumbai unit of the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), which is expected to expedite the cracking of cyber crime-related cases by police, is likely to be set up in a couple of months, a senior official said here today.
"The idea was proposed two to three months back and the unit is expected to be set up in a couple of months," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Atulchandra Kulkarni.
CERT handles computer security incidents throughout the country.
Kulkarni said Mumbai was more vulnerable to cyber attacks as it is the commercial capital of the country.
"The reason we wanted a local unit is that normally in case of any urgent situation it takes a minimum of two days for CERT in Delhi to respond. Moreover, it does not function on weekends," the officer said, adding, cyber crime-related issues will be addressed immediately by the unit.
Meanwhile, Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) KMM Prassanna said an order will be placed soon for buying Netbooks for all crime branch officers.
