Admitting he was doing films and serials to keep the passion of theatre alive, celebrated playwright-actor Kaushik Sen says in our land none can solely sustain on theatre.
"My priority remains theatre. But I have to keep slogging by doing serials so that I can sustain my passion for acting. I do other economically rewarding creative jobs to keep the passion of theatre alive," the livewire of Swapnasandhani, an acclaimed theatre group, said.
Members of my theatre group do turn up in a fictional television series drawn from real life crime stories for economic reasons but never flunk any rehearsal and are as commited to stage as any theatre activist should be and "I don't object," he said at the relaunch of hugely popular Janoni serial.
Kaushik recalled his debut serial Kalpurush on Doordarshan where he essayed the role of Arko years back.
Referring to the winding up of many channels, Kaushik said "Several colleagues in showbiz are faced with a crisis situation. But serials like Janoni, which had set up a new benchmark among tv sops or 'Sahityer Sera Samay' (Stories defining the best phase of Bengali literature) prove that people will always root for good quality, content-rich products.
Janoni, to be aired on Akash eight, will be contemporised with tales of woes of elderly parents in present day society, how they land up in old-age homes, uncared and unattended by successful sons.
It is the first Bengali serial to be re-invented for the small screen years after attracting TRPs in successive weeks.
