Chief Justice of India-designate, Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha today vowed to firmly maintain the balance in providing justice without tilt towards anyone.
Speaking at a function to bid farewell to CJI P Sathasivam, who demits office tomorrow, he said the Supreme Court only follows and interprets the Constitution and the laws of land and holds balance.
"An occasion, such as this, is not appropriate to talk about my plans for Indian judiciary. I reiterate, Supreme Court of India, represents no class, no caste, no majority, no minority...It follows and interprets Constitution and the laws of land...It holds the balance. Presiding over this Court, my task is to hold the balance firmly and ensure that balance tilts towards none," Justice Lodha said.
Justice Lodha, who succeeds Justice Sathasivam as the 41st CJI on April 27, said the outgoing Chief Justice will be remembered for turning the spotlight on sensitive issues.
"He constituted the Supreme Court Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaint Committee in last November so as to sensitise the public on gender issues and to address complaints made with regard to sexual harassment in the precincts of the Supreme Court," he said.
In a lighter vein, Justice Lodha took a jibe at Justice Gyan Sudha Misra, who will be demitting office on Sunday and is known for starting her day in the court room a bit late.
"No matter what time sister Gyan Sudhaji entered the court room, it was always 10.30 AM. She would tell us rather lightly, 'brothers, you enter the court room early'.
