Makbool Farooqi, a nagar panchayat member was shot dead by two bike-borne miscreants when he was returning home last evening, they said.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead, police said.
Irate people blocked the road in protest against the killing following which senior police officers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The body has been sent for post-mortem, they said, adding investigation is on in the matter.
