A national competition policy would help countries reap economic benefits, experts said today.
In India, the Corporate Affairs Ministry is considering a National Competition Policy, that essentially deals with issues like competition impact assessment, among others.
Speaking at a seminar here, Australian High Commission's Minister-Counsellor (Economic) Matt Crooke said that lessons from the national competition policy in his country show that its principles "manifest in current policies, including current productivity-enhancing reforms".
Citing the 2005 Productivity Commission Review of the policy, he said there has been "significant net economic benefit of the reforms".
The seminar was organised by advocacy group CUTS International here.
Participating in the seminar, Thula Kaira from Botswana said that national competition policy needs highest political and government support in order for the reform process to be comprehensive and sustainable.
Kaira is CEO of Botswana's Competition Authority.
Planning Commission Member Arun Maira was also present at the seminar.
