The government should account for its failure to take stock of the 'law and order situation' in the wake of the 144-hour bandh called by an 'outlawed terror outfit', the party said.

"The chief minister must step down," Leader of Opposition of the Meghalaya Assembly Conrad K Sangma demanded at a press conference at NCP office here.

"If the government can't provide security to its people, it has no right to govern. The government has failed its people and Mukul should step down immediately,"

The Leader of Opposition, whose home constituency Selsella falls in West Garo Hills district, said due to the strike for the past five days, "there has been a complete shutdown of Garo Hills region."

Outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) had announced a one week bandh in the entire three districts of Garo Hills demanding 'halt' of operation against the militants and its camps in the Garo Hills.

The NCP believes that talks are the short and medium term solution to the problem of insurgency in Meghalaya while improving the economic condition of the masses through strategic plans and policies.

Conrad said the situation in Garo Hills region is "tense"(300 hours) and warned that if it continues , people will have nothing to eat. (More)
