"Natural disasters are like lessons for us and we should take them seriously. We are in the process of preparing an action plan to act tough on illegal constructions and encroachments in New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) areas," a senior official of the civic body said.
At present, NDMC acts on complaints about illegal constructions or encroachments in areas under its jurisdiction. However, there is no proper monitoring mechanism in place to take suo motu cognisance of such violations.
The complaints received at NDMC's call centre about encroachments and such constructions will also be dealt with in a more stringent manner, he added.
NDMC is also in the process of identifying buildings which are in a dilapidated state and need to be renovated or modified to make them earthquake-proof.
