There is a need for increased awareness, commitment and support for banning cow slaughter, when the support grows louder, it becomes more effective than law, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik said today.
"There is no need of separate law as the law already exists. There is need of increasing awareness, commitment and support for banning cow slaughtering. When the support would grow, it would become more effective than law," he told reporters here on being asked about the vexed issue of banning cow slaughter in the country.
Addressing the 5th convocation ceremony of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Veterinary university here, the Governor advised the students to follow the doctrine of Deen Dayal Upadyaya and work for the development of the country since the leader's name was associated with the university.
Naik also praised former Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Shastri and Atal Behari Vajpayi in making the country self-sufficient.
"While Lal Bahadur Shatri gave 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' slogan, Atal Behari Vajpayee added 'Jai Vigyan' to this slogan after the country's nuclear experiment," he said.
Former Vice Chancellor of the university M L Madan stressed on the need of promoting livestock.
"Since 'pashupalan' (live stock) is the backbone of agriculture, states and Centre should give maximum funding for promoting and preserving it. By promoting livestock, 10 per cent contribution of agriculture in GDP may be ensured.
"More contribution of agriculture in GDPmeans less poverty. Not only green revolution and white revolution depend upon livestock but it also opens the gate for more employment andeliminates malnutrition as well as poverty," he said.
He also felt the need of change in veterinary education with improvement in breeding of animals.
The university gave out three PhD degrees, while 18 students received masters degrees and 67 received bachelor degrees.
"Honorary degree was also conferred on K M L Pathak, DDG Animal Sciences ICAR and A K Srivastava, Vice Chancellor and Director NDRI Karnal. Six of the nine medal awardees were girls," Prof A C. Varsaney, Vice Chancellor of the university said.
