Welcoming the diplomatic thaw between his country and the United States, Cuban Ambassador to India Abelardo Rafael Cueto Sosa today said it was a "long-term" process due to the "complexities" involved.
"The negotiations between the two countries is a long-term process. It is moving very slowly especially because of the complexity involved, however we are hopeful of something concrete," Sosa said at a press interaction at the Press Club of India.
Speaking on the bilateral ties with India, Sosa said, "I can term the relations with India as 'bonita' which means cute. There are lot of things we have in common and this relation should get stronger."
"When Modi government came to power at the Centre, our President had sent a note of congratulations to the Indian Prime Minister to which Modi replied with a three paragraph message, you can well understand how good the ties are getting," he said.
Reaffirming his stand on the Cuba's sovereignty, the ambassador said, "We have clearly stated that everything is negotiable expect our sovereignty and independence."
He added, "Americans are fantastic people, but they have a sense of self-importance in their mind that they are supreme, they are the saviour of the world, this may be an hindrance to the talks which I think is slowing it down."
Referring to ISIS activities in Syria he alleged that Islamic fundamentalists are a "creation" of US' policies.
