New ghat to come up at Haridwar

As part of its ambitious plan to clean river Ganga, the Centre has approved various schemes for Uttarakhand including construction of a new ghat at Haridwar and strengthening the embankments of Mandakini and Sarawati rivers.
An official statement said here today that Union Water Resources Ministry has approved various schemes sent by Government of Uttarakhand.
A new ghat will be constructed in Haridwar at Chandighat and the construction will be managed by central PSUs and work will start next month, it said.
A consortium of engineers from central PSUs will be formed for strengthening the embankments of Mandakini and Saraswati rivers and construction of ghats at Kedarnath, the statement said.
"The consortium will prepare the DPR in consultations with the experts from Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. The sewage treatment plants at Muni ki reti and Jagjeetpura in Rishikesh will be set up by central PSUs. The work is likely to start by February next year," it said.
With regard to the assistance sought by the state government for Ardh Kumbh, it has been decided that wherever possible the same will accorded under Namami Gange programme.
A meeting was held between Union Water Resources Secretary Shashi Shekhar and Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand Rakesh Sharma on October 23 to discuss these issues.
Subsequently, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti had a meeting with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat at Dehradun on October 25, where it was decided that Union Water Resources Ministry will soon take a decision on these issues, the statement said.
