Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today said that construction of the new Assembly building would begin this year and it would be ready by 2019.
"We should be able to have the new building by 2019," the chief minister told reporters here.
Sangma said that the Rs 75 crore project would be fully funded by the state government after the Centre refused to support construction of the new Assembly building.
The heritage Meghalaya Assembly building was gutted in 2001 and since then the state did not have a permanent Assembly building.
The delay in the construction of the new building was due to problems in finalization of the land.
