An NGO here has adopted a leper colony which houses 35 families with an aim to end discimination meted out to the residents and to bring about development in the area.
The NGO named Aas Ek Mission has adopted Lal Bahadur Shastri Colony which was built 30 years ago as a rehabilitation centre for leprosy patients.
Even though none of residents now suffer from leprosy anymore, locals avoid visiting the area, Aas Ek Mission President Vijendra Kharb said, adding the residents have still not been integrated with the mainstream.
Deputy Commissioner Ajit Balaji Joshi who was present during the adoption ceremony here today, distributed items of necessity to women and children of the colony and promised to solve their problems at the earliest.
Kharb said they had been working in the colony for the last four months when they decided to adopt the colony.
To integrate residents into mainstream the NGO has decided to build a public toilet, send the kids to schools and also provide technical education to them, Kharb said.
