The National Green Tribunal today indicated that it may direct deregistration of 10-year-old diesel run vehicles and 15-year-old petrol run vehicles plying in the national capital region and asked the Delhi government to clarify its stand on the issue.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar made the observations after it was told by the counsel for Delhi government that over 3,000 such vehicles were impounded in last one year.
While asking the counsel to make the government's stand clear, the tribunal said, "Make your stand clear, so that we may consider whether to ask the Registrar of the vehicles to deregister all such vehicles."
While answering tribunal's query as to why its order was not being implemented, the government's counsel said that due to lack of law in this regard, the impounded vehicles got relief from the magisterial court.
The court has now fixed the matter for further hearing on July 18.
The NGT had earlier taken Delhi government to task for its failure to implement its order banning such vehicles from plying on the roads here.
It had also slammed the government over incidents of waste burning and dust pollution in the national capital.
The NGT had also asked Delhi government and other authorities to create awareness about air pollution caused by vehicular emissions and burning of municipal solid waste and issue advertisements on the lines of the odd-even scheme.
