NHRC orders probe into kids working as bonded labourers in JK

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today ordered an inquiry into a case of over 42 people, including minor adivasi girls from Chhattisgarh, allegedly working as bonded labourers at brick kiln factories in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Commission Director General (Investigation) has been asked to do a spot inquiry and submit a report expeditiously in the matter, an NHRC statement said.
The decision was taken after taking cognisance of a complaint that more than 42 people, including minor tribal girls from Janjgir Champa in Chhattisgarh, are working as bonded labourers at two brick kiln factories located at Agra Chowk and Purab Pana villages in Nawanshahr tehsil in Jammu district, it said.

The complainant alleged the brick kiln owners do not pay them full wages and torture them. Workers are also threatened that they would be thrown into the chimneys, the statement said.
The complainant has expressed apprehension that these bonded labourers are victims of human trafficking and have been sold by some agents to brick kiln owners and sought Commission's intervention in the matter, it said.
