NIA files charge sheet against al-Qaeda suspect

The National Investigation Agency today filed a charge sheet against an Al-Qaeda suspect who allegedly wanted to carry out terror attacks in India and had plans to fight for the Rohingya cause in Myanmar.

The charge sheet was filed in a special NIA court against Samiun Rahman alias Raju Bhai, resident of London, against various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act among other laws, according to an official statement.

Rahman was arrested from East Delhi area in September last year by the Delhi Police. He had then reportedly told interrogators that he was working for al-Qaeda, a banned terrorist organisation.

The case was later handed over to the NIA.

During the investigation, it was established that the accused had entered India via the Beenapole border, West Bengal, from Bangladesh illegally and stayed at several hideouts in the country, the NIA said in the statement.

He wanted to establish a base of the al-Qaeda in Delhi in order to carry out terrorist activities in India and he also had plans to fight for the Rohingya cause in Myanmar, it said.

At the time of arrest, a pistol and four rounds of ammunition were recovered from the possession of the accused.

Incriminating material on his allegiance to the al-Qaeda and his chat with an al-Qaeda associate was recovered his laptop and mobile phone, the NIA said.
