Nifty ends flat as RBI keeps rate unchanged

The NSE 50-share Nifty pared its intra-day losses to end almost steady after the Reserve Bank kept its key policy rate unchanged in line with market expectations.
The RBI kept its repo rate unchanged at 6.25 per cent for the third consecutive policy review but increased the reverse repo rate by 0.25 per cent to 6 per cent.
Opening with caution ahead of the RBI policy outcome, the key indices moved in negative terrain during the larger of the session but regained most of the losses from late afternoon trade before ending marginally lower.
The NSE 50-share Nifty opened lower at 9,245.80 and moved in a range of 9,267.95 and 9,218.85 before concluding at 9,261.95, showing a marginal loss of 3.20 points or 0.03 per cent.
Counterwise, Nifty PSU banks fell by 1.07 per cent, followed by FMCG 1 per cent, pharma 0.67 per cent and banks 0.14 per cent.
Broader smallcap declined by 0.57 per cent and midcap ended with slight gains.
Buying in energy 1.20 per cent, realty 0.91 per cent, media 0.65 per cent, commodities 0.58 per cent, metal 0.28 per cent and IT 0.26 per cent capped the losses.
A total of 895 shares ended with losses while 791 finished with gains while 64 ruled steady.
Major Nifty losers were Hindalco 2.14 pct, ITC 1.74 pct, SBIN 1.51 pct, ICICI Bank 1.40 pct and Coal India 1.26 pct.
However, Ambuja Cement gained by 1.93 pct, Zeel 1.82 pct, Tata Steel 1.69 pct, Reliance 1.66 pct and Bajaj Auto 1.65 pct.
Turnover in the cash segment fell to Rs 25,422.94 crore to Rs 30,287.83 crore yesterday.
A total of 13,507.91 lakh shares changed hands in 9,052,233 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms stood at Rs 12,148,762 crore.
