Benchmark Nifty extended its losses for the second session today, falling 5.35 points to 9,121.50 on selling pressure in pharma and banking counters.
Resuming positive on higher Asian cues, the key index could not sustain gains amid volatility.
Asian markets ended mixed on prospects of a less-hawkish Federal Reserve policy trajectory. European shares were trading higher as investors eyed rising oil prices and talks between Greece and its Eurozone creditors.
The NSE 50-share Nifty index opened higher at 9,133.95 and hovered between 9,147.75 and 9,087.20 before closing at 9,121.50, a marginal loss of 5.35 points, or 0.06 per cent. It saw an intra-day movement of about 60.55 points.
Sector-wise, pharma led the losers' pack, falling 2.02 per cent, followed by PSU bank (0.92 per cent), private bank (0.47 per cent), auto (0.46 per cent), energy (0.46 per cent) and bank (0.43 per cent).
Gainers included realty (1.59 per cent) and FMCG (1.26 per cent).
Key losers were Idea (4.86 per cent), Dr Reddy's (4.06 per cent), Axis Bank (2.89 per cent), Yes Bank (2.05 per cent) and Aurobindo Pharma (1.87 per cent).
Notable gainers were Grasim (2.78 per cent), ITC (2.13 per cent), ONGC (1.68 per cent), Bharti Infratel (1.51 per cent) and Ambuja Cement (1.26 per cent).
A total of 588 scrips advanced, 1,072 declined, while 81 remained unchanged. Total securities that hit their price bands were 113.
Turnover in the cash segment climbed to Rs 29,314.61 crore from Rs 22,650.34 crore yesterday.
