However, media, bank and finance service counters saw selling.
Overseas, European shares were trading higher. Most Asian stocks ended higher. Investors were cautious ahead of US economic data as well as Chinese Communist Party congress next week.
The Nifty opened lower at 10,227.65 and moved in a range of 10,251.85 and 10,121.60 before ending at 10,234.45, showing a marginal rise of 3.60 points, or 0.04 per cent.
It saw an intra-day movement of about 39.25 points.
However, Media dropped by 1.75 per cent, Finance Service 0.27 per cent, Bank 0.23 per cent and Private Bank 0.23 per cent.
The Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices outperformed the benchmark with gains of 0.58 per cent and 0.71 per cent, respectively.
Major index gainers were Cipla, BPCL, Bharti Airtel, Indiabulls Housing Finance and HPCL.
Losers were Zee, Axis Bank, Tata Motors, Bajaj Finance and Dr Reddy's.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was in favour of gainers. On the NSE, 844 stocks advanced, 840 declined and 90 stocks remained unchanged.
Turnover in the cash segment fell to Rs 28,016.58 crore from Rs 29,905.35 crore yesterday.
A total of 12,645.06 lakh shares changed hands in 9,335,000 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms on NSE stood at Rs 1,37,92,538 crore.
