Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's assertion to raise the retirement age of dentists to 67 years at par with those working in the health services cadre could face problem as the Dental Council of India has fixed it at 65 years.
As per a 2011 letter of the Union Health Ministry to the Dental Council of India, the retirement age was determined at 65 years.
"The retirement age of the dental faculty working in the Government Dental institutions be increased from 62 to 65 years," the Ministry's letter to the Dental council December 7, 2011 said.
The Union Health Ministry letter directed the Dental Council to take up the matter with state governments for implementation of the retirement age.
All dental colleges are controlled by Dental Council of India and hence its rule has to be complied with.
The Chief Minister had said in the Legislative Council yesterday that the state government was aware of the anomaly in fixation of retirement age for dental doctors and would soon raise it to 67 years at par with those working in the health services cadre.
