No of convicted Indians in US jails saw a decline in 2013-14

The number of convicted Indian nationals languishing in US jails saw a decline in the period of 2013-14, US Immigration and Custom Enforcement said today.
According to the information obtained under Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), it was found that there was decline in number of convicted Indian nationals in US jails between 2013 and 2014.
In 2013, 149 Indian nationals were lodged in US jails as convicted criminals, which dropped to 115 in 2014, the US Immigration and Custom Enforcement informed the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) under FOIA.
The same period also saw a drop in the number of non-criminals lodged in US jails from 288 in 2013 to 244 in 2014.
NAPA Executive Director Satnam Singh Chahal stated that out of 334 Indians removed, as many as 135 were convicted criminals and 199 were of non-criminal nature.
Around the same period, 14 convicted criminal persons and 89 persons of non-criminal nature of Indian origin returned to detention centers and jails, he said.
