Kerala Assembly speaker T P Sreeramakrishnan today came down heavily on lawyers stating that they are not the owners of the court and nobody has the right to deny the people their Right to Information.
Speaking at the "Media Awards-2015" function at the Press Club here, he referred to the ongoing stand-off between lawyers and journalists and said "preventing media from covering court proceedings is not acceptable."
"Nobody has the right to deny the people their Right to Information. If anyone has the misunderstanding that they have more powers in the judiciary than the others, it should be corrected," he said.
"It is also the responsibility of the judiciary to clip the wings of those denying people's Right to Information," he said.
"...A society which rejects the media, is rejecting democracy itself," the Speaker said.
He also advised the media to show responsibility while reporting. "They should not lose the faith reposed on them by the general public..."
Earlier, he gave away Media Awards for the year 2015, instituted by Calicut Press club in the names of eminent personalities in the field like K C Madhava Kurup, former PTI General Manager P Unnikrishnan, Journalist and Socialist Theruvath Raman and Calicut District Football Association's Mustaq Sports Journalism and Sports photography awards to five journalists who excelled in their respective fields.
