US President Barack Obama will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel in April next year and participate in a major trade show in the country, the White House has said.
Obama will be the first sitting US President to attend the Hannover trade show in Germany, the world's largest trade fair for industrial technology.
"In late April, President Obama will travel to Germany to participate in the Hannover Messe - the world's largest trade show for industrial technology - and to meet Chancellor Angela Merkel," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said yesterday.
"The President's participation - a first for a sitting US President - presents an unique opportunity to showcase American innovation and ingenuity and to highlight the United States as a prime investment destination," Earnest said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had attended the Hannover trade show this year.
Founded in 1947, the Hannover Messe attracts approximately 6,500 exhibitors and 200,000 visitors from across the globe each year.
"While in Germany, the President will address efforts to advance negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership," Earnest said.
"This visit, which will be the President's fifth to Germany, underscores the enduring political and economic ties between Americans and Germans and highlights the US commitment to trade and investment as drivers of job creation and economic growth on both sides of the Atlantic," Earnest said.
