Odisha to import 2,500 tonnes of pulses to stabilise market

With the prices of pulses soaring high, Odisha government today said it has placed orders to import 2,500 tonnes of the commodity to stabilise the market.
"Orders have been placed with the Nafed to import 2,500 tonnes of pulses. The assignment will reach here soon and we hope the situation will normalise soon," Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Sanjay Dasburma said.
He said the production of pulses is not sufficient in the state to meet demands. Odisha procures pulses from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattishgarh, he said.
"As the weather remained fragile in the states producing pulses, there is less production leading to price rise in the market," the minister said adding the new crop would be harvested in 15 days to one month's time.

He further said, the district collectors have been asked to keep a close watch on black marketeers in their respective regions to prevent price rise and hoarding.
The district collectors have also been asked to hold meetings with wholesalers and retailers in order to put a check on the rising prices of pulses, the minister said.
