A 69-year-old man was arrested today for being involved in the alleged assault of an undergraduate girl student in the city last week for wearing shorts and smoking.
A resident of Ranikhuti area within the limits of Netaji Nagar Police Station, Kamal Ganguly was arrested this evening for his alleged involvement in the incident, a senior police officer said.
Ganguly and his son Souvik Ganguly were among the six men who assaulted and abused the 22-year-old girl for wearing shorts and smoking on last Friday night, as per an FIR registered with Netaji Nagar Police Station.
The arrested has been charged under IPC sections 341, 323, 506, 509, 354 and 34, Officer In-charge of Netaji Nagar Police Station, Debasish Chakraborty told PTI.
Sources in the Kolkata Police said the senior Ganguly has admitted that he had "protested" when the girl was chatting with a boy in an indecent manner on the road last Friday night.
In fact, two sketches were drawn and the girl identified Kamal Ganguly.
Asked whether another accused Souvik, currently holidaying with his family at Digha would be arrested, police said, "We are looking into the matter and need to ascertain what role Souvik had played that night and only then we will decide."
Police, it was learnt, was also looking for the friendly neighbour who rescued the girl and her friend from the persons who had assaulted her on the night of April 15.
"We are reading about this rescuer in newspapers... We need to talk to him and also find out his version to reconstruct the incident... We don't understand why he is hiding," Chakraborty said.
Police sources said investigations have also revealed that there was no political rally of Trinamool Congress in that area on Friday last as the girl alleged in her complaint.
"There was no rally of the TMC in the area that day... There was a rally of the CPIM that day but that a bit far away from the area where the alleged incident happened. We are further probing into it," the officer said.
The alleged incident surfaced after the 22-year-old girl shared her ordeal on social networking site.
