Four motorcycle-borne gunmen fired straight shots at the DawnNews Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) van in the Essa Nagri area, leaving a technician severely injured.
Sindh home minister Suhail Anwar Siyal said that the Chief Minister has ordered a probe into the attack which took place last night.
The attackers opened fire on the van from the left side and took us by surprise, Cameraman Umar Shah who was in the van said.
Footage from the scene of the attack showed multiple bullets had penetrated the vehicle.
Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) President Rana Azeem announced a countrywide protest against what he called 'an attack on journalism', while other senior journalists and anchors said the government was failing in its duty to provide a secure environment to the media to carry out its duties without fear.
Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid condemned the incident, terming it an attack on "freedom of expression".
This is the third such incident in Karachi this year.
Last year attackers also opened fire on a parked DSNG of Express News in Nazimabad killing two technicians and the driver.
Pakistan was termed the most dangerous country for journalists in the world in 2014 by International Federation of Journalists.
As many as 14 journalists were killed in the country last year.
