A one-year-old filly - offspring of the world's most sought-after racehorse stallion - has fetched a record 5.25 million pounds at an auction.
The unnamed filly fetched the highest price ever paid for a female yearling when she was sold for five million guineas or 5.25 million pounds at bloodstock auctioneers Tattersalls in Newmarket, UK.
The horse is the daughter of Galileo, an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse, who was once the most sought-after stallion on the planet and enjoyed a highly successful track career before retiring to stud.
She was bought by bloodstock agents Mandore International on behalf of Al Shaqab Racing which is owned by Qatar's Sheikh Joaan Al Thani.
"She is a magnificent specimen. We bought her sister last year and we think she could be special, we didn't want to miss this one," Nicholas de Watrigant of Mandore said in a statement of the auction house.
Commenting on the record-breaking Galileo filly Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said: "Regally bred and the most outstanding individual, she is a filly who has absolutely everything."
"The Burns family have sold so many magnificent yearlings at Tattersalls and she is the ultimate tribute to three generations of outstanding horsemanship," said Mahony.
