Over 1.24 lakh seats are lying vacant in the engineering colleges affiliated to the Uttar Pradesh Technical University even after the completion of the first round of admission procedure.
"Over 1.24 lakh seats are still lying vacant in the engineering colleges under the UPTU and re-counselling would be done soon," sources in the University said.
According to the statistics available, against the 1.47 lakh B.Tech seats, 40,000 candidates have so far turned up for counselling and only 23,000 of those who applied have taken admission, sources said.
Sources admit that poor infrastructure and low placement record could be the cause of low turnout of students almost every year now for around 335 B.Tech colleges affiliated to the University.
Besides the government colleges there are only 10 to 15 private colleges which have been getting full strength of students every year, they said.
Senior officials in the varsity said that Uttar Pradesh does not require more than 100 colleges and almost 70 per cent seats needed to be scrapped immediately.
In the past few years there has been a spurt in the number of colleges under the University with new colleges being set up in an unplanned manner all over without any policy for it as such, the official said, adding maximum number of colleges have come up between 2007 and 2010 and the trend of seats lying vacant have also started from 2007.
