According to a written reply by HRD Minister Smriti Irani in Lok Sabha, there are 16,600 teaching positions in various central universities.
As per the data provided by Irani, the number of existing posts as on January 1, 2016 is 10,672 while 5,928 posts are vacant.
Irani said the onus of filling up the teaching posts lies with the central universities which are autonomous bodies.
In a written reply to another question, she said UGC has informed that out of 34,272 sanctioned non-teaching posts in 39 central universities, 10,015 posts were lying vacant on January 1.
