Pact with foreign countries helps growth of maritime traffic

India has entered into a number of international maritime agreements or MoUs during the last three years which help both the countries to encourage and facilitate steady growth of maritime traffic, government told the Lok Sabha today.
The pacts include one for cooperation in the field of Ocean Economy between India and Mauritius, signed during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 11-12, 2015, Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said.
He said such international treaties also help in exchange and training of staff and students from maritime establishments, exchange of information necessary for accelerating and facilitating such growth.
In addition, such pacts facilitate establishment of joint ventures in the field of maritime transportation, ship building and repairs, information technology, port facilities etc.
An MoU between India and the Netherlands for bilateral cooperation in the fields of ports and maritime transport and logistic, originally signed on February 12, 2008, was extended on May 1, 2014 for a further period of upto May 10, 2017.
A maritime shipping agreement between India and Vietnam was signed on May 24, 2013 and an MoU on technology cooperation in shipping and ports infrastructure sectors between India and Austria was signed on October 3, 2012, he said.
