Addressing a press conference, he said LHB coaches were lighter and had inbuilt safety features as they can absorb shock and impact of derailment more effectively.
The allocation of four rakes for Madurai division had been made, and they would come in phases before the end of this year, he said.
The coaches would be used for Pandian express and Rock Fort express.
He said the division earned a profit of Rs 735.17 crore in the financial year ending 2015-16, compared to Rs 723.36 crore last year.
The doubling of Dindigul-Tamiraipadi section in Dindigul-Madurai sector would be completed this week. With this the running time between Madurai and Chennai could be reduced by 19 minutes,he said.
He said provision of LED lamps and energy saving measures were being taken up on a largescale to save electricity.
