A Parliamentary panel today decided to summon a top Uttar Pradesh bureaucrat over allegedly stopping Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son Akhilesh from attending Parliament two years ago.
The Privileges Committee of Lok Sabha today decided to summon then UP Chief Secretary Atul Gupta. Gupta is now heading the state Finance Commission.
The decision to summon Gupta was taken after the panel found "discrepancies" in the statements given by two UP officials and the response of the state government on the issue.
The Privileges Committee has already grilled the then Lucknow DIG D K Thakur and DM Anil Kumar Sagar.
The SP leaders had alleged that as police had erected barricades outside their Lucknow home, they could not move out, thus preventing them from attending Parliament proceedings.
The incident took place on March 7, 2011 when BSP leader Mayawati was the Chief Minister. Akhilesh was then a Lok Sabha member.
Sagar and Thakur have said the barricades were erected to maintain law and order. They also contended that when Mulayam said he wanted to attend Parliament session, he was escorted to the airport.
The panel also took up the privilege notice given by MP Aruna Kumar Vundavalli against a Telugu newspaper for allegedly publishing an article tarnishing his image.
