In order to curb theft of water from Gurgaon Water Channel (GWC), the district administration has decided to carry out patrolling along the channel, especially during night hours.
The decision was taken during a joint meeting of police, irrigation and HUDA department officials of both Gurgaon and Jhajjar districts called by Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Shekhar Vidyarthi today, an official release said.
In the meeting it was informed that the water in GWC has decreased by 50 per cent in the last three days. If it keeps on receding for another 4-5 days, it will lead to a shortage of drinking water in Gurgaon city, it said.
So it was decided to conduct joint patrolling along GWC by officials of irrigation and police departments, it said.
The patrolling is being done as it is suspected that one of the reasons behind the decrease in water in GWC is that because of scanty rains in the region, farmers whose fields are located on both sides of GWC might have resorted to theft of water from the channel.
GWC originates in Sonepat district and reaches Gurgaon after passing through Rohtak and Jhajjar districts.
During the meeting, DSP Jhajjar Anup Singh Dahiya apprised the Deputy Commissioner that two teams comprising irrigation and police officials have been constituted in Jhajjar district for safeguarding the GWC.
Vidyarthi ordered formation of similar teams in Gurgaon as well for safeguarding the portion of channel falling in the district.
Executive Engineer of Irrigation Department in Gurgaon K C Yadav said the quantity of water discharged in the newly-constructed NCR water channel has also been enhanced from today to ensure adequate supply of water to Gurgaon City.
According to Superintending Engineer of HUDA Adarsh Kumar Gupta, approximately 140 cusecs water is required daily in Gurgaon.
Vidyarthi appealed to people not to panic about water shortage, but use it judiciously. He assured them that they will get water sufficiently like before.
Earlier, in the monthly meeting of officers, the Deputy Commissioner ordered formation of a district-level committee under his chairmanship for speedy redress of grievances of war widows, ex-servicemen and families of other decorated soldiers. It will be third such committee in Gurgaon district, said a release.
