Haryana minister Kavita Jain today said awareness programmes were the need of the hour to change the perspective of the masses towards the girl child.
Though the sex-ratio in Haryana has improved, there is a need to change the mindset of the people to ensure that girls get the same rights as boys, she said at a leadership summit on gender-based violence here.
The event was organised by the Haryana State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (HSCPCR) and Save the Children.
The Women and Child Development Minister appreciated the efforts of the organisations for implementing awareness campaigns at the grassroots.
"It is the need of the hour to bring an end to gender- based inequality and it is only possible by bringing girls into the social, political and economic spheres," she said.
The minister, along with other participants, pledged to treat boys and girls equally.
Jain also flagged off three mobile caravans with the message 'Identity is different, rights are one'.
These caravans will reach out to different villages in Hisar, Sirsa and Fatehabad districts and educate people on issues related to the girl child.
Chairperson of the Commission Jyoti Bainda, Political Officer at the US Embassy, Department of State, Jake Miner also spoke on the occasion.
Representatives from the HSCPCR, Department of Sociology, Panjab University and Project Director Save the Children Jatin Mondar addressed the gathering at the event.
