The eight-hour-long operation was carried out yesterday on a 53-year-old man by a team of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery led by Dr T Shyam Singh, head of the cardiovascular surgery, PGIMER sources said.
The surgery was made possible after the family of a donor, who had met with an accident and had been declared as brain-dead, decided to donate his organs.
A few months ago, the premier institute had been given approval for heart transplant by the Union Health Ministry.
Earlier in 2011, the PGIMER had conducted its first liver transplant, but the patient couldn't survive.
