A day after NCP nominee from Amravati constituency, Navneet Kaur Rana filed a complaint against sitting Shiv Sena MP Anandrao Adsul for running a smear campaign against her in run-up to polls, Shiv Sainiks today filed a defamation plaint against her with local police.
Scores of sainiks, led by MLA Abhijit Adsul, former MP Anant Gudhe and others gheraoed Gadgenagar police station here and filed a complaint against the actress-turned-politician for "defaming" the sitting MP.
Police have recorded the complaint but did not file any case against Rana who is pitted against the Sena strongman in upcoming polls.
Meanwhile, police told PTI they were recording statements of certain persons in connection with the alleged character assassination complaint lodged by Rana against Adsul and two other sainiks yesterday.
Adsul and his two supporters were booked for offences under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act (as Rana claims she belongs to a scheduled caste) and for criminal intimidation and outraging a woman's modesty.
According to Rana, the matter pertains to the shooting of an election-related programme for a Marathi news channel on Friday morning.
During the shoot for the programme, in which rival candidates are supposed to debate inside a bus, Adsul allegedly lost his cool and made casteist remarks against Rana.
Adsul has already dismissed the allegations as baseless and accused Deputy Chief Minister and NCP stalwart Ajit Pawar of putting pressure on police to register a case against him.
