The rhino was killed near Kothalchang Forest Camp in Burapahar range of the 'World Heritage Site' around midnight, the official said.
During routine patrolling in the wee hours, the Assam Forest Security Force personnel found its carcass, he said.
Stating the poachers were suspected to be from the neighbouring Karbi Anglong district hills, the official said seven empty cartridge shells of .303 rifle were found near the carcass.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Assam unit has condemned the killing of rhinos in Kaziranga and demanded the resignation of Forest Minister Etuwa Munda by taking responsibility for the killing of the pride of Assam.
A BJYM press release here today accused both Munda and his predecessor Rockybul Hussain of being responsible for the slaughter of the one-horned great Indian rhinoceros in the Park.
The Morcha also demanded that Munda and the Forest Department ensure safety of the rhinos by protecting them.
