As per records, Danushkodi was a small town with a population of 3,197 people in 1961 and was a thriving export centre with various merchandise such as eggs, vegetables, cotton clothes, brass vessels being traded with Sri Lanka.
On December 22, 1964, a devastating cyclone hit Dhanushkodi with tidal waves razing to the ground various buildings, including temples, church, post office and Railway station.
The entire Dhanushkodi virtually became a ghost town with people who esaped the nature's fury living in temporary hutments.
Of late, government has been taking various measures to develop Danushkodi as a tourist attraction.
The district administration has proposed to set up a sound and light show at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore in the town.
