Pranjala Yadlapalli's hopes of retaining her crown were dashed by unseeded Chinese rival Xiyu Wang after she got the better of the top-ranked Indian junior in straight sets to clinch the girls' singles title at the BVG India-MSLTA B1 ITF Asian Junior Tennis Championships here today.
The fifth seeded Indian girl, who won a doubles event at the same tournament last year, was handed a humiliating 0-6 1-6 defeat by the 15-year-old Wang in just under an hour at the MSLTA School of Tennis here.
Wang, ranked 206 in the world, continued to be the nemesis of the Indian girls all the way to her maiden title, having beaten two other host nation's players -- Snehal Mane and Mahak Jain -- earlier in the tournament.
"I'm very happy and am feeling nice to win the Asian title," said Wang, who did not drop a single set on her way to glory.
"I will give my opponent all credit. She played well. I felt a bit tired and just could not get going," said Pranjala, who had to be satisfied with the 120 ITF points, which would propel her back into the top-50 bracket from current ranking of 94.
Wang pocketed 180 points to ensure an entry into the top 75 bracket.
In the boys' singles final, which too was one-sided, Japan's 17-year-old Naoki, currently ranked 126, upset second seeded Filipino rival Alberto Lim, ranked 31, 6-3 6-1 in just over an hour, to win his fifth ITF juniors crown.
"I played very well and felt confident from the start of the event. It was hot when I came, but I got used to the weather. I played great tennis over the entire week. It was a very well-organised event and I feel happy to win here," Naoki said.
Results of the finals:
Girls singles: Xiyu Wang (Chn) bt 5-Pranjala Yadlapalli (Ind) 6-0 6-1.
Boys singles: 8-Tajima Naoki (Jpn) bt 2-Alberto Lim (Phi) 6-3 6-1.
