Shouting slogans and carrying flags, the students demanded that Dasgupta be brought back to the university. He was yesterday transferred to Durgapur government college as an associate professor.
"We are protesting against the overnight transfer of the registrar whose contribution has been immense all these years. As a geology teacher also, he was a favourite with students. We condemn this attitude of university authorities as this is a big loss for us," Presidency Students' Council vice-president Amardeep Singh told PTI.
University Vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia said her office had nothing to do with the transfer.
