The strike has been called by Joint Council of Bus Syndicates to press for its demand for restructuring the fare structure.
''We are constrained to call the one-day token strike on July 31 as our demand for fare restructuring is overdue but the state government is not paying any deed to our problem,'' Council secretary Sadhan Das told PTI today.
Das said the private bus operators were under 'tremendous pressure' due to recurring diesel price hike and steady rise in cost of inputs and spare parts.
''Diesel price has increased seven times in recent years, but our demand for fare hike has not been accepted by the state government,'' he said adding the operators are not being able to overcome the losses and 3,000 buses were on the verge of being phased out.
The council was contacting the Bengal Bus Syndicate on the issue, he added.
