The scholarship was started in memory of ex-cadets of the school - Priyanath Mukherjee and Jaydeep Chaterjee.
Both the former students died in encounters in Jammu and Kashmir. Priyanath was wing commander of Indian Air Force and Jaydeep was captain in Indian Army.
Old Teachers and Boys Association of Sainik School Purulia started the scholarship for a meritorious and poor student on the golden jubilee celebration of the school.
Kumar, who got the scholarship of Rs 10,000, belongs to a poor family of Purulia district.
"The scholarship will ease financial burden from my father's shoulders," Kumar, a student of class-XI, said.
