Protests continued at the Aligarh Muslim University campus for the second consecutive day today as girl students took out a procession against the murder of an undergraduate student and demanded tight security measures.
Expressing outrage over the incident, the students took out a procession in the campus and handed a memorandum to the district authorities, demanding tight security for students.
A number of students had also held a candle march last night to highlight the sense of insecurity among students after the incident.
The protesters had also handed over a memorandum addressed to the President of India demanding a CBI enquiry into the incident. They also demanded that the culprits should be arrested within the next 24 hours.
Sensing rising tempers, senior district officials led by Additional District Magistrate (City) Avdhesh Tiwari and Additional Superintendent of Police Brijesh Singh rushed to the campus to defuse the situation.
"We have formed separate teams which are conducting raids to nab the culprits. Some important leads have been found and we expect a breakthrough shortly and we have assured the students that the police is taking all possible efforts to nab the culprits," the ASP said.
Meanwhile, the AMU Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen (Rtd) Zameer Uddin Shah had yesterday urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to institute a CBI enquiry into the matter.
The VC has also send a letter to the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in this regard.
Alamgir, a student leader and a final year student of Bachelor of Social Work, was killed after being shot by attackers on the main road near the varsity's Chemistry department on Friday.
